Gmail and many hosts allow large messages, but corporate Exchange and university servers still bounce 20 MB Camera stills. Chat apps compress anyway — pre-shrinking gives you a vote before WhatsApp’s unknown recipe. HR and visa forms often want 100–200KB JPEGs; that overlap with the KB spoke is real. HEIC is the silent failure. You send a still; a Windows recipient sees nothing. HEIC to JPG, then encode. PDF handoff of a still is HEIC to PDF or print-to-PDF after JPEG — different job.
Privacy: resumes, IDs, and medical stills should not hit a random compressor cloud. WASM in the tab. If a form also prints a pixel spec, resize first. If it only prints megabytes, encode (and still consider a smaller long edge so quality can stay decent).

Caps differ; the still should be universally openable
Email attachments: stay under the lowest hop in the chain (sender host, recipient host). When unsure, under 5–10 MB per still is polite; many offices still prefer under 1–2 MB. Embedded newsletter images follow website rules (narrow width, encoded). WhatsApp and Messenger will recode; starting from a 2000px JPEG looks better than a 48 MP original they panic-crush. Forms: read KB versus MB. Ticketing systems (Zendesk, Jira) often cap 10–25 MB total, not per still — still encode. Outlook desktop used to block certain types; JPEG/PNG remain the safe pair.
