Why JPEG still wins after Apple switched the camera roll
Since iOS 11, iPhone cameras default to High Efficiency Image Container. The files are smaller than old JPEGs at similar visual quality, which is why Apple made the switch. The rest of the world did not follow. Windows Explorer often needs a paid codec pack. Android chats show a grey tile. Job portals, MLS systems, and photo kiosks still list JPG or JPEG in the accept list. One vacation shot should finish in seconds on Edge. Forty listing photos, a wedding dump, or a school-trip folder belongs on dedicated workers. What JPEG cannot do
JPEG has no alpha channel. If you need a cutout for a site, export PNG instead. JPEG is also lossy: a high-quality encode looks excellent for email and social, but it is not an archival master. Keep HEIC (or TIFF) when you may reprint later.
