Does the photo leave my machine during a sample?

Not on this local canvas path. The file is read in the tab, drawn in RAM, and the hex comes from the pixel you clicked. We do not keep a silent copy of the still after you leave. If you later share the photo publicly, strip EXIF in your own tools — sampling is not a metadata editor.

When should I copy HEX instead of RGB or HSL?

Copy the spelling the destination file already uses. Stylesheets and many design tokens prefer HEX. Some engines and inline styles prefer rgb() or hsl(). Mixing formats in one token set is how midnight diffs get noisy. The swatch is the same color; only the notation changes.

Can I sample pixels from the desktop behind this tab?

This is not a system-wide eyedropper unless the operating system already provides one. Capture a screenshot, drop that still here, and sample from the capture. OS overlays, HDR tone-mapping, and scaled displays can still shift the hex a little, so treat it as a working value.

Do I pay to copy a hex string?

Everyday sampling is free. There is no watermark on a clipboard value — that would be a parody of a tool. Create an account only if a labeled Pro feature on another page actually needs it. A six-character code should not require a CRM record.

Will this hub simulate color blindness for me?

No. Get the pair first, then run a dedicated checker that models deuteranopia or other deficiencies. Simulators disagree with each other and with real observers. This page’s job is a trustworthy sample, not a medical or accessibility certificate. Label the two hexes so you know which pair you tested.

Can I send this hex straight to a printing press as CMYK?

We speak screen codes, typically sRGB-shaped HEX and RGB. A press wants a print pipeline with profiles, paper, and ink limits. Convert in a tool built for that if a press is the destination. Mapping a phone JPEG onto a named ink without measurement is how reprints surprise you.

A useful sample is a decision about which pixel to trust, not a subscription to a “creative cloud.” Drop a still the browser can decode, or ignore the photo and tune a swatch by hand. Lighting, JPEG mush, and phone tone-mapping all shift what you remember seeing. Treat the first hex as a start you can nudge in HSL, not a lab measurement you would send to a press. Nothing here is a brand-system generator. Palettes, pixel magnifiers, designer logo work, and phone-thumb sampling live on their own pages so this hub can stay a sampling desk. The still is painted on an HTML5 canvas in RAM. Close the tab and the working bitmap is gone; your clipboard and notes app are the archive. Why a hub

Eyedrop, a manual board, and format copy belong together because people arrive with mixed jobs: a screenshot they cannot inspect, a wall in a listing photo, a token they already half-know. Palettes and pixel magnifiers have their own URLs so we do not cram every noun into this H1. Start here when you only need one pasteable value. Open a spoke when the job is a set, a one-pixel sprite highlight, or a fat-finger phone tap.

Privacy

The vacation still does not become a remote mood board. Sampling is a local canvas read. That matters for unpublished packaging, client logos, and family albums. We do not keep EXIF sightseeing copies on a disk. If you will publish the photo later, strip location metadata in your own workflow — this tab is not a DAM.

What we will not do

Sell you a yearly suite to unlock a hex string. Watermark a clipboard value. Pretend a phone JPEG is a spectrophotometer. Map a screen code onto a named Pantone ink without a print pipeline. Paste and leave. If you need WCAG math, take the pair into a dedicated contrast checker after you have the two values.

A magnifier helps on busy prints, woven fabric, and anti-aliased UI chrome. Click inside a fill, not on the mixed edge where two colors blend. If two nearby clicks disagree, you hit compression or a gradient — zoom more rather than averaging the argument in your head.

Paste into CSS, Figma tokens, or a hardware paint app. We are not the paint store and we will not sell you a gallon from a listing photo. If the destination wants HSL, copy that spelling instead of converting by hand and introducing a rounding surprise.

Matching a physical object via a photo

Aisle lighting, noon sun, and shop LEDs produce different hexes of the same jacket. Label which light you sampled. Treat it as a start, not a lab spectrophotometer or a paint-chip contract.

Quick contrast checks

Grab the pair from a UI still, then verify in your design tool’s contrast UI. This hub will not certify WCAG. It only hands you the codes so you can stop guessing named CSS colors.

Cloud “color from image” sites

Family photos as their dataset is a bad trade for a clipboard string. Keep unpublished stills here, local, and leave if a form wants an account before it will show a hex.

Averaging a whole region when you needed a pixel

Region tools return mush on icons and sprites. Use the magnifier energy: click the thread, not the blur, not the drop shadow, not the checkerboard behind a transparent PNG.

Expecting print-accurate LAB from a phone JPEG

You will not get a press proof. You will get a useful screen hex. Convert in a print tool if a press is the destination, and bring a physical chip if the job is wall paint.
