What does the quality slider control?

It runs from 1 to 100 and starts at 80. JPEG and WebP turn that percent into canvas quality, so 80 is 0.80. PNG uses a different map: high values stay near lossless, mid values quantize the palette, and the lowest values also scale the image, down to 0.75 of each side at the bottom. Move it while you watch the preview.

How are PNG files compressed?

The file stays a PNG. High on the slider, the save stays near lossless, which suits screenshots and logos. Mid values quantize the color palette, with dithering, so the file can shrink. The lowest values also reduce the pixel size, and the bottom setting scales each side to 0.75. If the new PNG is heavier, you keep the working image instead.

What if the compressed image is larger than the original?

You keep the working image. The tool compares the candidate with that file and returns the original whenever the candidate is the same size or larger. That is common for a JPEG already saved at a tight quality. Lower the slider and look again, or resize the pixels first if the photo is much larger than the slot it will fill.

Which image types can I compress here?
