JPEG is a lossy photograph format from 1992 that still runs the internet. Cameras, scanners, and “export for web” dialogs emit .jpg/.jpeg. This spoke is not PNG, not WebP, not HEIC. If Photos still holds HEIC, convert to JPEG, then use this slider so recipients and CMSs can open the file.
Quality is not a percentage of “truth.” 0.92 looks close to the incoming JPEG; 0.6 is a marketplace thumb; 0.4 is a last-resort portal. Each re-encode adds blocking and ringing. Keep the Camera original. Do not loop this tool to chase 1 KB.
Chroma subsampling (4:2:0) is why saturated edges on type look smeared — another reason screenshots should stay PNG. Progressive JPEG can feel faster on the web; we still output a still you can attach. Windows, Mac, and Linux are the same tab — no Paint.NET required.

What a JPEG re-encode can and cannot fix
It can drop megabytes from a 12 MP export so Gmail and WordPress stop complaining. It cannot restore highlight roll-off from a phone HDR JPEG that was already quantized. It cannot add pixels — that is enlarging, and it looks plastic. Metadata: some EXIF may be stripped depending on how Canvas exports; do not use this as an archive of GPS. Color: sRGB assumed. CMYK JPEGs from print shops may shift — convert in a proper app first. Pair with Crop Image if the subject is a small region of a huge frame; encoding unused sky is wasted bits. After a sane quality, if the file is still huge, the long edge is the problem — Image Resizer.
