The Word file is passworded. Can LibreOffice render it anyway?

Unlock first. We cannot render what we cannot open. After the PDF exists, protect again if policy wants a lock on the letter. Order of operations: unlock, accept changes, embed fonts if needed, convert, proof, then lock. A passworded file is unread bytes, not a secure wrap.

Do macros in the .doc or .docx run during convert?

Ignored. The document body is what renders. That is a feature for untrusted files. If the layout depended on a macro to update fields, update fields in Word yourself before you drop the file here. We will not run unknown code to paginate a letter.

Is a thesis-length .docx still a free single-file job?

Does legacy .doc from 2003 take the same path as .docx?
