What does this image enlarger actually change?

Pixel width and height. Metadata DPI tags are not magic — a 72 DPI file and a 300 DPI file with the same pixel box print the same size. Use the print spoke for inches × DPI math.

When should I skip enlarging and recapture instead?

If faces look plastic at 100% zoom on the original, scaling will not restore them. Recapture, request a larger export from the designer, or accept a smaller physical print.

Which formats work without a convert step?

JPG, PNG, and WebP. HEIC from iPhone, animated GIF, BMP, TIFF, and AVIF need a raster Convertify4u already offers (or a first-frame PNG). Then come back and scale.

Is this generative AI?

No. It is classical multi-step Canvas interpolation plus optional edge/contrast tweaks. See the AI spoke if you arrived from an “AI upscaler” search and want that distinction spelled out.

Why is there a 10,000 px cap?

Browser Canvas memory is finite. Ten thousand pixels per side is already a huge raster (a 10,000 × 10,000 PNG can exceed hundreds of megabytes uncompressed). For posters, 150 DPI at viewing distance often beats chasing 300 DPI past the cap.

Should I compress before or after scaling?

After. Compressing first throws away the samples you are about to interpolate. Scale, check 100% zoom, then compress only if a portal has a kilobyte cap.

Does GIF 256-color dithering apply here?

No. Palette reduction is a GIF-maker concern. This tool scales full-color JPG/PNG/WebP. If you started from a GIF, rasterize one frame to PNG or JPG first — you are no longer in 256-color GIF land.

When growing pixels helps — and when it just makes mush

This hub is the on-device path to make a photo occupy more pixels. HTML5 Canvas runs progressive 2× steps with optional sharpen, contrast, and brightness. Nothing is stored on Convertify4u. That is useful when a portal rejects a file as too small, a lab wants more width for a small print, or a hero slot is 1600 px and your export is 900. It is the wrong tool when the source is already a 400 px thumbnail: stretching cannot invent eyelashes, type, or fabric that the camera never captured. Classical upscaling interpolates existing samples; it is not a neural model that hallucinates detail. Native inputs are JPG, PNG, and WebP. GIF, HEIC, BMP, TIFF, and AVIF need a decoded raster first (HEIC converters, first-frame GIF to PNG or JPG, then return here). GIF 256-color palette tricks belong to a GIF maker, not this page — after a first-frame decode you are scaling a normal bitmap. Output is capped at 10,000 px per side. After you lock dimensions, compress if email or a CMS still complains about megabytes. Crop empty margins before you scale so you are not enlarging sky.
