What actually makes a PDF smaller

Most bulk comes from embedded photos and high-DPI scans, not from the words. Light trims object streams without flattening text. Balanced re-encodes page images at a readable ebook-style DPI. Maximum uses screen-style Ghostscript settings when a portal names a hard kilobyte cap. Uploads travel over HTTPS and are deleted after you download. Free covers everyday files up to 12 MB; Pro raises the cap and queues multi-file or oversized packs on dedicated workers.

Pick a preset before you guess

Start with Light on a native digital report — fonts stay sharp and the save is often enough for email. Use Balanced on camera scans so lab values and signatures stay legible. Jump to Maximum only when a job board or embassy names 100–500 KB. Over-crushing a scan until the type becomes mush is the usual failure; if the output is unreadable, go back one step instead of scanning the paper again.

What this tool is not

Compression is not OCR. It does not unlock a password file, merge several PDFs, or redact names. Unlock first if the document is encrypted. Split a 200-page scan if you only need three pages under a tiny cap. Merge after shrinking if you still want one packet.

Where to go next

Need a named kilobyte target? Open Compress PDF to a Specific Size. Sending through Gmail or WhatsApp? Use the email-and-sharing guide. On a phone, the mobile compressor uses the same three presets.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop the original

Any PDF you are allowed to process. Everyday jobs up to 12 MB need no account.

  2. 2

    Choose Light, Balanced, or Maximum

Light keeps structure. Balanced and Maximum send image-heavy pages through Ghostscript on the VPS.

  3. 3

    Check bytes, then download

The UI shows original vs output size. Files are deleted after download.

Use cases

Email that bounced

Gmail and many hosts reject attachments around 25 MB. Shrink once, then attach the smaller file.

Archive of phone scans

Camera PDFs balloon in cloud backup. Balanced usually keeps writing readable while cutting a large share of the weight.

LMS and job portals

Course and application forms often cap uploads. Maximum is the preset built for those ceilings.

One file at a time on free

The free path is a single document. Queue folders on Pro so the browser is not encoding a stack by itself.

Problems we solve

Photo-heavy pages

Exported slides and camera captures are mostly images. Maximum targets those streams.

Sites that sit in a queue

Edge routing keeps the form responsive while Ghostscript runs on the worker.

Leaving copies on a converter

Uploads are removed after download. Do not treat any online compressor as a document archive.

Specialized compression guides

Trust & privacy

Free everyday path

No account for standard jobs up to 12 MB.

Ghostscript on Hetzner

Large files route to European VPS workers instead of stalling the tab.

Three named presets

Light, Balanced, and Maximum make the size-versus-clarity trade-off explicit.
