How many frames and how large a canvas does the GIF maker allow?

If you are chasing a smaller file, the target-size retries also change scale and frame count before they touch this number.

Why does a transparent PNG look solid in the finished GIF?

Frames are composed on white, #ffffff, before encoding. A transparent PNG shows that white in the GIF. The palette is also limited, so flat color and a photo behave differently. Plan the matte before you generate, and put any text or watermark overlay on the frames while you can still see them against that white.
