Efficient is not the same as lossless
WebP’s talent is packing a sharp-looking photo into fewer kilobytes than a naive JPEG. People type “without losing quality” because they have been burned by 40% sliders. Honest version: lossy WebP discards information. A high-quality setting from the original HEIC usually looks excellent for heroes. 400% pixel-peeping may show differences. If you need a true lossless graphic, PNG (or lossless WebP in a pipeline that supports it) is the better master — then derive. This spoke is the file-size versus appearance deep dive.
