Collage Maker Guide

High Quality Collage Maker — the pixel pipeline

“HD” on this page means we do not crush your files on ingest and we capture the board at 2× CSS size. It does not mean we hallucinate detail that was never in the photograph.

Sharpness is a budget, not a slogan

What 2× capture actually exports

The on-screen board is 1080×1080, 1080×1350, or 1920×1080 CSS pixels. html2canvas draws that DOM at scale 2, so a square download is typically about 2160×2160. Portrait 4:5 lands near 2160×2700; 16:9 near 3840×2160. Those numbers are the quality ceiling of this studio. If every source photo is 400 px wide, the cells still look soft — scaling a thumbnail to fill a cell cannot invent pores and fabric weave. Bring camera originals (or at least the WhatsApp “HD” toggle) if the board will be inspected at 100%.

PNG versus JPG 0.92

JPG export uses quality 0.92 — high, not lossless. Fine for photographs. PNG keeps hard edges: clip-path hearts, graphic backgrounds, screenshots with UI chrome. PNG files are larger. Re-exporting a JPG board as JPG again is how you get muddy skies; if you need another pass, keep a PNG master. We do not run a second “optimize for web” crush after you click download. If a site later recompresses on upload (Instagram always does), start from this master rather than a screenshot of the preview.

Focus pan beats “enhance”

Each cell uses object-fit cover. The subject can sit on a seam if you leave focus at 50/50. Drag inside the cell so eyes, logos, or SKUs sit in the middle. That single habit does more for perceived quality than any “HD mode” checkbox. Also watch gap and radius: large gaps shrink the picture; huge radius clips corners of faces. Quality is composition, then pixels, then codec — in that order. For paper output, read the printable spoke: 2160 px at 300 DPI is only about 7.2 inches, which is a frame, not a bus-stop poster.

How it works

  1. 1

Start from the largest useful original

Camera roll originals beat social-app saves. Convert HEIC to PNG if you need maximum headroom.

  2. 2

    Fill the cell, then pan

Cover crop is default. Nudge focus so the story is not riding the gap.

  3. 3

Pick the codec for the content

PNG for graphics and masks; JPG 0.92 for photo-heavy boards you will actually send.

Use cases

Portfolio tiles

Work samples that will be opened full-screen in a browser, where softness is obvious.

Product hero grids

Fabric, jewelry, and food where texture is the sell.

Print comps for small frames

4×6 / 5×7-class gifts where 2160 px can still look intentional. See printable math before you promise 11×14.

Deck screenshots

A 16:9 board dropped into a slide, viewed on a projector that punishes mush.

Problems we solve

Upload compressors

Cloud collage sites often transcode on the way in. This path keeps your decode in the tab.

Paywalled “HD export”

We do not sell a second resolution. The 2× capture is the export.

Screenshotting the preview

The on-page preview is scaled down to fit. Always use Save Collage, not a phone screenshot of the UI.

Trust & technology

No ingest transcode

Files are not run through a mystery 70% JPG on arrival.

Documented capture scale

html2canvas scale 2 is the mechanism — not an unnamed “enhance” network.

You choose the codec

PNG and JPG are explicit. We do not silently switch formats.
