PNG to GIF — Design Sequence Toolkit

Lossless sources before a lossy palette. Keep canvases the same size, prefer hard edges and limited colors, and downscale 4x exports toward ~1200px before encode.

PNG sequences for craft — alpha has its own page

Designers export PNG for a reason

PNG to GIF is the default handoff from Figma, Illustrator, and Photoshop when you want sharp UI states. Sources are lossless; the GIF palette is not. Prefer flat fills and large type. Photographic PNGs still band. Batch means multi-select of one component’s states, not a thousand unrelated exports in one silent queue.

This is not APNG authoring

“Animated PNG” in the wild often means APNG. This studio encodes GIF from PNG stills. If you need true PNG alpha animation, APNG or animated WebP may be a better destination — see GIF vs MP4. Here you get delay, loop, crop aspects, and a ~30-frame cap.

When to leave transparency to the sister page

Deep GIF transparency, matte fringing, and sticker cutouts belong on the transparent spoke. This page owns pipeline craft: consistent artboard size, hover/pressed/success order, and README motion without uploading comps to a random cloud.

How it works

  1. 1

Export PNG frames from the design tool

Same artboard size every frame. Outline type. Flatten effects you do not want quantized separately.

  2. 2

    Order states on the timeline

Idle → hover → pressed → success as a loop, or a linear tutorial of three screens.

  3. 3

    Generate and preview gradients

Soft shadows posterize. If the matte looks dirty, read the transparent guidance next.

Use cases

Component states

Button feedback for a design system doc. High contrast, few colors, held frames so reviewers can read labels.

Icon morphs

Simple shape steps. Hairline icons need to be drawn larger than you think or they sparkle after the palette.

README and changelog motion

A few UI screens that GitHub and many wikis will autoplay as GIF when MP4 embeds are awkward.

Sticker bases

Clean plates ready for the transparent spoke if you need a cutout loop.

Problems we solve

Huge 4x exports

Resize toward ~1200px. Retina dumps make slow encodes and fat files.

Photo PNGs

A 16-bit product shot is still a photo. Expect banding; consider MP4 for the PDP.

Expecting perfect alpha in GIF

Indexed transparency is not PNG-alpha. Use the transparent spoke for honest limits.

Trust & technology

Native PNG input

First-class in Gif Studio — no convert-first for standard PNG.

Local encode

Unreleased comps stay on the designer’s machine.

Linked prep tools

Background remover and crop when plates need help before the timeline.
