Alpha dreams versus GIF index transparency

Hard edges survive; gradients fringe

Preserve transparency only when the art is poster-flat. Soft hair, smoke, and drop shadows pick up a matte fringe after the 256-color index. “Alpha channel GIF” is directional language — GIF is not PNG-alpha. If the channel allows APNG, animated WebP, or a WebM with alpha, use those instead (see the format comparison spoke).

Build from cleaned PNG plates

A transparent GIF from a PNG sequence starts with empty alpha, not a white studio backdrop. Background Remover helps isolate a subject. Then flatten fills, limit unique colors, and preview on both a dark and a light matte so halos show up before Discord does.

When transparency “isn’t working”

Usually the matte color leaked into the plate, or a JPEG was labeled as a cutout. Re-export PNG with true empty alpha, then re-encode. There is no binary healer. JPEG cannot carry alpha at all — start over from PNG.

    Spot halos on black and on white. Crop empty margins so the file is not a giant padded box.

    Discord dark UI, a light website, a slide. Indexed transparency behaves differently on each.
