Bytes follow pixel count more than people expect. Area is width×height. Halving both sides is a 4× drop in samples before JPEG even runs. Quality sliders on a huge bitmap fight physics.
Government forms love 100KB. Job boards 200KB. Email cultures 500KB. Visa and scholarship portals often 1MB. PNG of a photograph will miss the small ones — switch to JPEG. Identity scans should not hit a random compress cloud; Canvas is local.
If quality bottoms out before the cap, you still have too many pixels. Do not stack encodes on the mushy download — go back to the original, smaller box, milder JPEG. Image Compressor is the encode sibling once the long edge is sane.

Why resize beats blind crush on Camera stills
Pixel count is the volume knob
Noise, fine hair, and busy backgrounds cost bits. A smaller box plus moderate JPEG beats a 4000px still at quality 0.2. Faces remain faces.
Common ceilings, named without a keyword chant
Under 100KB: IDs, some visas — think 600–800px JPEG. Under 200KB: many HRATS. Under 500KB: homework and polite email. Under 1MB: still not a 12 MP original, but you can keep more of the scene.
Encode as a second pass
Canvas downsample, export JPEG/WebP around 0.92 to start, check OS properties, nudge quality or shrink again. Email stills: 600–800px wide is a classic corporate habit.
