Cameras and phones default to JPEG (or HEIC that you should turn into JPEG for Windows and email). Scaling a JPEG in Canvas and exporting JPEG at ~0.92 preserves photographic grain better than wrapping the same still in PNG (huge, little benefit). Screenshots and logos are the PNG spoke. WebP and GIF can decode here; export a web-friendly type. BMP, TIFF, SVG, AVIF often need a convert to JPEG or PNG first if the picker shrugs. EXIF orientation is respected on load so a sideways Camera still should preview upright. Cross-platform: Edge on Windows, Safari on Mac, Chrome on Android, Safari on iPhone. No Paint.NET, no Preview export maze required. In-app webviews (Instagram) are bad decoders — use a real browser. After the box, compressor if Gmail still nags.

Photographic bytes across devices

JPEG as interchange

Email, CMS, marketplaces, and Windows all speak JPEG. Scale here, export JPEG. Re-saving many times still accumulates loss — keep the Camera original. Print-quality samples: downsample from the largest JPEG you have, then decide if 0.92 is enough.

Other containers you might drop

WebP heroes, GIF stills (not a video editor). HEIC: convert to JPEG if Canvas in that browser cannot decode it. TIFF/BMP/AVIF/SVG: rasterize or convert, then scale. Do not expect SVG to stay vector.

Phone versus laptop

Same URL. 48 MP modes hitch on phones — downsample in Photos first. MMS and some carriers still have KB walls: geometry then encode (reduce-size spoke).

How it works

  1. 1

Get the still into a real browser

AirDrop, cable, or Camera roll picker. Avoid in-app webviews for HEIC.

  2. 2

Drop JPEG (or converted HEIC), set the box

Lock aspect. Export JPEG for photos.

  3. 3

    Save and share

Messages, Drive, CMS. Encode afterward only if the cap is bytes.

Use cases

iPhone stills before iCloud links

Smaller JPEG, fewer “cannot open HEIC” texts from relatives.

Android MMS limits

Carrier KB walls. Smaller box, then encode.

Windows laptop quick jobs

Explorer drop, no extra editor.

Mac without Preview’s export dance

Safari tab, integers, download.

Problems we solve

App Store gallery scrapers

Browser picker is per file. Native “resizer” apps often want the whole library.

Sideways stills

We respect orientation on load. Preview before you download.

HEIC in a JPEG-only picker

Convert first. Honesty beats a fake “all formats” claim.

Trust & technology

Photo-first export

JPEG out for JPEG-like sources.

Touch-friendly

Large targets on phones.

No account

Everyday Canvas jobs do not start with email.
