How do I scale a PNG without losing holes?

Drop PNG, lock aspect, download PNG. Canvas is cleared first so we do not fill white. Confirm checkerboard after save. If you started from JPEG, there were no holes to keep.

Mobile Safari and Chrome?

Same alpha path as desktop. Huge PNGs may hitch — that is RAM.

PNG versus JPEG for a wordmark?

PNG (or SVG source). JPEG is for photographs. A wordmark as JPEG is how you get muddy type and a matte.

Why is the resized icon soft?

You upscaled, or the master was tiny. Export larger from the design file. Isolation of a photographed logo will not match a true vector.

Dark mode and light mode sites?

Alpha adapts to both. Test on checker and on both tints. A mark designed only on white may need a second color version — that is design, not scaling.

Should I compress after scaling a logo?

Only if the PNG is huge. Aggressive compression dirties edges. Prefer the right pixel pack (32/180/512) over crush.

PNG with alpha is a compositing format. Naive tools fill transparent pixels with white. This spoke clears the canvas so holes stay holes — logos on dark themes, stickers on Stories, stream overlays. Preview on a checker, then on the real background color. Hard edges: downscale with high-quality smoothing. Upscale tiny raster icons looks soft — redraw in Figma or export 2× from SVG. Brand kits should not leak to a cloud farm; Canvas is local. Photographs saved as PNG are usually a mistake (huge). Use the JPEG spoke for Camera stills. After scaling a logo pack (32, 64, 180, 512), compress only if the file is absurd — aggressive crush dirties edges. Flatten to JPEG only when a form forbids transparency.

Alpha channels and crisp UI edges

Transparency is not a white background

Straight alpha PNG. Premultiply mistakes in other editors cause halos later — test on mid-gray and on brand color. Screenshots of UI belong here so type is not already JPEG-ringed.

Retina packs from a large master

Export 2× from vectors when you can. Raster-only: start from the largest PNG, downsample to 32 / 180 / 512. Never inflate 64px to “make a 1024 app icon.”

Brand safety

Unreleased marks stay on the laptop. We do not watermark. If the PNG is a photo of a booth panel, isolation (logo background remover) may be needed before a clean scale.
