Background Remover Guide

Shopify Cutouts — Consistent PDPs, Faster Grids

Dawn, Debut, and custom themes reward the same crop and a quiet field. Isolate in the tab, then size for the theme — not for Amazon policy.

Shopify product photos are processed in your browser. Unreleased catalog shots are never uploaded to Convertify4u servers.

Shopify is a storefront, not Seller Central. You can use lifestyle photography. You still convert better when every tile in a collection is the same ratio and the subject is not fighting a messy table. This spoke is DTC: product detail galleries, collection grids, mega-menu thumbs, and the same master reused in Meta ads. Amazon white-field rules live on the product spoke; here the theme designer’s image width is the law. Dawn’s product media often displays large squares or 4:5 frames. Uploading a 6000px PNG with alpha will wreck LCP on mobile. Isolate, then Image Resizer to something like 2048 on the long edge (Shopify’s historical product-image sweet spot), then compress. WebP in the theme is a delivery detail — your upload can still be PNG or JPEG depending on whether you need holes. Unreleased capsules should not hit a cloud cutout API the week before a drop. Local inference is the point. Metafields, 3D models, and Shop app video are out of scope. After a consistent cutout grid, paid social can reuse the PNG on seasonal colors without recutting.

Theme geometry versus marketplace white

Collection cards: pick one ratio (1:1 is the usual) and stick to it so masonry does not jump. PDP zoom: keep enough pixels that pinch-zoom is not mush (2048-class), but do not ship 40 MP. Transparent PNG on a theme that already has a white section is fine; a dark luxury theme may want the PNG over charcoal — that is why alpha beats a baked JPEG. App Store “background remover” apps for Shopify often upload to a vendor; this path does not. Variants (color swatches) should share crop and camera height so the grid does not dance. After isolation, alt text and filenames are SEO — we do not write those. Pair with the batch spoke when you have 80 SKUs and a sequential loop.

How it works

  1. 1

    Note the theme’s display size

Inspect the collection card width. You will size to that × 2 for retina, not to your camera’s 6000px.

  2. 2

Isolate the SKU, keep a PNG master

Proof labels at 100%. Soft goods and hangers leak like fashion — that is the portrait/apparel problem if a body is in frame.

  3. 3

    Upload sized, compressed derivatives

Resizer then compressor. JPEG on white if the theme never needs holes. PNG if you composite on seasonal colors.

Use cases

PDP gallery heroes

Quiet field, product fills the frame, zoom still sharp.

Collection uniformity

Every tile the same crop so the grid looks like one brand, not twelve vendors.

Drop week

Embargoed stills stay on the laptop until the theme publish.

Ads from PDP masters

Same PNG on a campaign color. No second isolation.

Problems we solve

Lifestyle clutter killing conversion

The product should be the first read. Isolation is cheaper than a reshoot when the table is the problem.

Huge PNGs failing Core Web Vitals

Isolation does not shrink bytes. Compressor and sane pixel widths do.

Cloud apps seeing the drop early

Skip vendor APIs that ingest the catalog. This tab does not.

Trust, speed & privacy

Pre-launch privacy

Unreleased SKUs never land on Convertify4u disks.

Theme-aware next steps

We isolate; you size to Dawn or a custom grid.

No stamp

Storefront JPEGs should not include a tool watermark.
