Background Remover Guide

Product Background Remover — Catalog Isolation

Packaging edges, bottles, and boxes — not portraits. Export alpha, then place on white where the marketplace demands a studio field.

Export transparent cutouts, then place on white for marketplace main images. All processing stays in your browser.

Marketplace main images are a policy document, not a vibe. Amazon’s primary still is typically a product on pure white, filling most of the frame, no props, no lifestyle. eBay and Etsy are looser on secondary shots but still punish clutter on the first thumbnail. This spoke is isolation for objects: labels, corrugate, glass bottles, soft goods on a table. It is not a people retoucher — use the portrait page when a model is wearing the SKU. Workflow that survives policy: isolate to PNG, keep that as the master, composite a #FFFFFF (or near-white) layer in your listing tool if the channel forbids transparency. Many Amazon uploads want JPEG without alpha. Do not JPEG first and then hope the wall disappears — you will bake in the kitchen. Pixel minimums (often 1000px on the long edge, 1600–2000px preferred) are Image Resizer after the mask, not during it. Ghost mannequin and invisible-ghost apparel are a different craft (neck-join plates). We isolate what is in the photo; we do not stitch a hollow garment. Reflections on glossy packaging can be mistaken for “background.” Light the pack so the edge is a dark line against a contrasting sweep if you can reshoot.

White-field listings versus lifestyle PDPs

Main image: object-only, white or very light, no text overlays (Amazon is strict). Isolation gets you off the kitchen table; you still crop to the required fill ratio and convert to JPEG if the seller central rejects PNG. Secondary images may keep lifestyle — isolation is optional there. eBay “white background” promotions and Google Shopping feeds similarly prefer a clean field. Etsy handmade shots can stay in-context, but a consistent cutout grid still converts. Color accuracy: sRGB, no surprise filters. Infographics and size charts are design files, not this tool. After PNG export, compress so the PDP does not tank LCP — a 4000px transparent PNG of a mug is a performance bug. Shopify merchants who need theme-specific habits should also read the Shopify spoke; this page is channel-agnostic catalog work.

How it works

  1. 1

Shoot or pick a still with a clear silhouette

A box on a busy rug will leak. A bottle against a matching-color wall will leak. Contrast first, then drop the file.

  2. 2

    Isolate the SKU, inspect labels

Zoom on barcodes, foil stamps, and clear windows. If the mask punches a hole in a window, composite in an editor — the model is not a glass renderer.

  3. 3

Composite white and hit pixel rules

Place on white if the channel requires it, export JPEG, then resize to the marketplace minimum. Compress if the seller central still complains about megabytes.

Use cases

Amazon primary stills

Object on white, high fill, JPEG. Isolation is the first half; policy crop is the second.

eBay and Etsy grids

Cleaner thumbs in search. Handmade shops can keep texture in extra photos.

Catalog consistency

Same sweep, same crop, every SKU. Isolation plus a shared white template beats mixed kitchen lighting.

Paid social from the same master

Once you have alpha, drop the SKU on a campaign color. Do not recut from a flattened JPEG.

Problems we solve

Lifestyle stills rejected as main images

Policy wants a plain field. Isolate, then composite white — do not argue with the algorithm in Seller Central.

Inconsistent lighting across a SKU set

Cutouts on a shared white plate hide mixed rooms. They do not fix color casts on the product itself — white-balance the camera.

Paying a studio for every SKU

A sweep and this tool cover many hard-goods catalogs. Apparel on a model still needs the portrait spoke or a retoucher.

Trust, speed & privacy

Catalog-speed masks

Local inference so unreleased SKUs are not sitting on a public GPU queue.

Packaging-aware inspection

You still proof labels at 100%. The model is not a print inspector.

Pre-launch privacy

Drops and embargoed products stay on the laptop.
