Crop Image for Instagram, LinkedIn, and Profile Photos

Platforms crop you if you do not crop first. Instagram feed, stories, LinkedIn banners, and circular avatars each steal different edges. Ratios that still matter

Instagram portrait posts often live near 4:5. Square 1:1 is the safe feed citizen. Stories and reels are 9:16 and will hide the top and bottom if you designed a 16:9 YouTube thumbnail. LinkedIn profile is circular on top of a rectangular upload — put the face in the center, not the upper third. LinkedIn banners are wide; do not place the only important text in the right edge where a profile overlap sits.

Faces, groups, and type

Group photos: the crop that flatters the left person may decapitate the right. Make two crops if you need two avatars. Small type in the image will die at avatar size — put words in the caption.

Passport-style photos have their own geometry; do not use a casual 4:5 selfie crop for a visa form. Use the form’s millimeter rules.

After the crop

Color and compression are separate. Do not crop, screenshot the result, and compress the screenshot. Download the tool’s export.

Stories, highlights, and the chin problem

Story-safe zones hide the bottom behind stickers and the top behind usernames. If the crop is for a story, put the face in the center third, not where a 16:9 video would put the horizon. Profile highlights icons are tiny; a full-body crop becomes a blob. Crop tighter on the product or the face.

LinkedIn banner text should sit left-center. The right side collides with the profile circle on desktop and is cropped differently on mobile. Make two crops if you truly need both a banner and a square post from one conference photo.

Avatars, passports, and the circle mask

Circle avatars hide corners. If the interesting part of the photo is a sign in the corner, it is gone. Center the person. Never crop a group into an avatar by cutting through someone’s ear “because the ratio required it.” Pick another frame.

Privacy of portraits
