Document Scanner Tips for Receipts, Contracts, and Homework
A document scanner in the browser is a perspective and contrast tool, not a magic copier. Convertify4u’s /document-scanner helps you turn a phone frame into a flattened page. The paper still has to be lit, flat, and fully in view. If the thermal receipt is curled into a tube under a restaurant lamp, no crop will invent missing ink.
Lighting before you tap capture
Stand so your shadow is not the main character. Avoid a window blasting through thin paper (you will read the reverse side). Thermal receipts fade; scan the same day when you can. For homework, take the sheet off a glossy desk — reflections kill both human reading and later OCR.
Fill the frame with the page, then leave a slim margin so corners are visible. The flattener needs corners. A crop that already chopped the signature line cannot be recovered in software.
Convertify4u scan flow
- Open
/document-scanneron a phone if that is your camera, or upload an existing capture from Files. - Instant-labeled scanning stays on-device when the product says Instant. Cloud is for jobs that need a worker; those uploads are HTTPS and auto-delete.
- Capture or drop the image. Confirm the detected edges match the real page, not the table grain.
- Export PDF for packets, JPG for a single image field on a form.
- For multi-page expense reports, scan each receipt, then
/convert/merge-pdfin date order. - If you need searchable text (Ctrl+F on a contract), that is OCR — Pro ($9.99/mo) on Convertify4u, not a free digital convert pretending to read pixels.
- Keep paper until reimbursement clears. Digital is a copy.
Free everyday scans are for eligible pages. A box of archives is a batch/Pro conversation.
Receipts, contracts, and homework are different QA
Receipts: the date, total, and merchant name must be readable at 100% zoom. Tax auditors do not care about your artistic crop. If the total is in the curl, unroll and reshoot.
Contracts: every initialed clause and the signature block. Skew makes OCR and humans misread decimals. Two-sided prints need two captures; do not assume show-through is “page 2.”
Homework: teachers reject cuts that hide the name line. Include the header. If the assignment is a booklet, scan in reading order, not in the order the pages fell on the bed.
File size after scanning
Phone cameras produce 8MB JPEGs of a 4-inch receipt. Compress the PDF packet once on /tools/compress-pdf after merge. Do not Maximum-compress a contract you still need to print at a lawyer’s office.
Perspective, glass, and bound pages
A scanner app that “finds the page” can lock onto a placemat instead of the receipt. If the overlay rectangle is wrong, cancel and recapture rather than hoping a warp will un-crumple physics. Glass tables double the page; use paper or a matte folder as a backing. Bound homework that will not lie flat needs two slightly overlapping captures or a gentle weight on the opposite page — do not break the spine for a LMS upload.
Passports and IDs have glare from laminate. Tilt until the hologram is not a white blob, but keep all four corners. A pretty crop that loses the machine-readable zone is a failed scan even if the portrait looks fine.
Privacy of bank slips and IDs
Receipts contain card tails and addresses. Instant paths are the default I want for that. Convertify4u does not sell scans. Never upload someone else’s passport “to test the tool.”
If edges fail on a dark table or a page is always skewed, /contact with paper type (thermal, glossy, book) and Instant vs cloud — not the bank statement. Safaat Rahman Siham will take a lamp recapture over a warped PDF that a portal stamps illegible.
