Should I convert HEIC to PNG to protect quality?

Only if a tool in the next step truly requires PNG. HEIC to JPG at quality 0.92 is the sharing path. A PNG of a photograph is often just a heavier copy of the same pixels. Keep the HEIC as the master and make one derivative for the portal that asked.

Does JPG to PNG remove the background?

Format debates on the internet sound like sports teams. In practice you pick a container for a job: keep a camera original, send a photo through a hostile portal, or hold a cutout with transparency. HEIC is a camera original, not a web format

HEIC (and HEIF) is what many iPhones write to the roll. It is smaller than a similar-looking JPG at capture time. Support outside Apple is patchy: some Windows machines, some CMSs, some email gateways. Keep HEIC when you still own the library and might print or recrop later. Do not use HEIC as the file you embed on a public marketing site unless you have tested every target browser. You probably have not.

JPG is the interchange still

JPG (JPEG) is lossy, universal, and the language of portals, printers’ consumer kiosks, and “attach a headshot.” It does not store transparency. Repeated save cycles in editors add mud. Convert once from HEIC or from a PNG photo, then stop touching the pixels except for a single compress pass.

Use /convert/png-to-jpg when a screenshot-sized photo PNG is blocking an upload. Use /image-compressor when the JPG is the right format but the wrong weight.

PNG is for graphics, type, and holes

PNG is lossless for typical 8-bit images and can store alpha. Logos, UI, comics with hard edges, and product cutouts belong here. Photos saved as PNG are often accidentally huge. That is not “higher quality” in a way humans see on Instagram; it is a tax.

Sharing with humans and machines you do not control: JPG.
Transparent listing image or logo: PNG.
Archive of iPhone captures you still edit: HEIC master plus a JPG derivative when needed.
Print at large size: start from the least-reencoded master (HEIC or original PNG graphic), not from a 40KB avatar.

Email, CMS, and print in one sentence each

Email: JPG unless the recipient is a designer who asked for PNG. CMS featured images: JPG for photos, PNG for logos with type or holes. Print lab kiosks: they asked for JPG 90% of the time; bring a high-quality JPG derived once from HEIC, not a screenshot of Photos.app.

A common failure is converting HEIC → PNG “for quality,” uploading a 15MB file, getting rejected, then converting that PNG to a low-quality JPG. You paid the size tax and the quality tax. HEIC → one good JPG is the adult path for sharing. HEIC stays in the library.

If a Windows PC opens the JPG but an old Android email client still will not, the problem may be the filename (IMG_1234.HEIC.jpg double extensions) or a mail gateway stripping attachments. Rename simply.
