How to Convert a File the Short Way

Speed is mostly choosing the tool that matches the file you already have. A second converter, a desktop install, and a signup form are how a two-minute job becomes an evening. The fast path is the one that tells you which of those you opened.

Name the output before you drop the file

Write down the extension the other person asked for. A school portal that says JPG does not want a HEIC with a renamed ending. An employer that says PDF does not want the DOCX you are still editing. A marketplace that says transparent PNG does not want a JPEG of a white box unless that white box is the spec. Once the extension is clear, open that tool and ignore the neighboring buttons until the download is in the folder.

iPhone stills start at HEIC to JPG. The encoder writes quality 0.92. Keep the HEIC. The JPG is the file you attach. If the portal then complains about weight, compress that JPG once. The image compressor is a slider that starts at 80, and it stays in the browser. Do not bounce the photo through PNG hoping a new container will heal the first encode.

Digital PDF, scan, or pages you already trust

If you can highlight words in the PDF, PDF to Word is reconstructing text. Open the DOCX and check the first page, a table in the middle, and the last page. If you cannot highlight, you have a picture of a page. That is OCR, and it belongs on a signed-in plan after a sharper capture, not on a free button that will hand you a screenshot inside Word.

If the PDF is already the right format and you only need pages in a different order, do not convert it to Word and back. Merge when you are assembling a packet. Split when you are pulling an exhibit. Organize when a page is in the wrong place. Those page tools can stay in the browser when they are labeled Instant. Compress afterward, once, if a form published a size. The presets are Light, Balanced, and Maximum. There is no box for an exact kilobyte count. Light rewrites structure and returns the original if the rewrite is not smaller. Balanced and Maximum rasterize, and they stop at 200 pages.

Office files are a render, not a rename

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint become PDFs on a worker. Set the paper, the print area, and the fonts before you upload. A font that exists only on your laptop may substitute. A spreadsheet with a million empty formatted rows may become a stack of blank pages. Fix the source and convert again. Instant merge will not typeset a DOCX.

A normal letter and a normal photo fit the free side. A folder of scans, or a deck of full-bleed photos, is the capacity conversation. Shrink images in the source app before you decide the cap is the obstacle.

Pictures have their own short list

JPG to PNG does not add a hole and does not add sharpness. PNG to JPG gives up transparency on purpose, which is what you want for a photo trapped in a huge lossless file, and what you do not want for a logo. A cutout is the background remover: one file, up to 25 MB, transparent PNG, in the browser. JPG export of a still-clear backdrop fills white, and WebP or JPG saves at quality 0.92.

Crop when the frame is wrong. The locks are freeform, square 1:1, portrait 4:5, landscape 16:9, and a Facebook frame at 1.91 to 1. There is no circle mask and no millimetre passport preset on that cropper. Enlarge only when the original is already sharp and only a little small. More pixels are not a new photograph.

A silent loop is the GIF maker: up to 30 frames, long edge 1200 pixels, frames painted on white. Sound and a long demo belong in a video file. A paper page is the document scanner. Magic Color is the contrast filter it starts on. You can download a PNG, or a one-page A4 PDF that embeds a JPEG at quality 0.92.

One download, then stop

Keep the master. Name the derivative for the destination. Open it in the app that will receive it, at the size a person will actually see. If that check passes, you are done. A second convert is how quality disappears and how an hour disappears with it.

Anything that did upload is deleted after processing, typically within one hour and no later than 24 hours. Download before you close the tab.
