Will JPG to PNG make the photo sharper?

No. You get the same pixels in a PNG container. Soft focus and JPEG blocks remain. If the next step needs PNG for a technical reason, convert once. If you needed a smaller file, compress the JPG instead.

Does this add transparency?

No. Alpha comes from a cutout. The background remover returns a transparent PNG, up to 25 MB, in the browser. Choosing JPG on that export fills the clear area with white.

When is PNG the right export for a photo?

When a tool or a printer asked for PNG, or when you are about to edit hard edges. For email, a CMS photo field, or a kiosk that asked for JPG, PNG mostly buys a larger upload.

What are the free limits?

Free server conversions allow 8 a day and 12 MB each. Pro raises the file cap to 100 MB. A phone JPG is often inside the free line. A giant export may not be, and that is the cap, not a failed click.

Should I convert HEIC straight to PNG?

Only if something in the next step requires PNG. The HEIC sharing path is JPG at quality 0.92. Keep the HEIC. Make one derivative for the portal that named an extension.

JPG to PNG: When Lossless Actually Helps

JPG to PNG is one of the most misunderstood clicks on the internet. People hear “lossless” and expect the JPEG blocks to vanish. They will not. When the conversion is justified

An editor or printer wrote “PNG only” on a spec sheet. A design tool composites better with PNG. You plan several nondestructive edits and do not want each save to re-JPEG. You need a format that can later hold transparency after you cut the subject (the alpha will not appear until you actually cut).

When the conversion is theater: uploading to Instagram, emailing a photo to family, or trying to “increase quality” for a listing. Instagram will JPEG you anyway. Family members cannot open a 12MB PNG on a bad connection as easily as a 400KB JPG.

Open the PNG at 100% zoom next to the JPG. They should look the same. If you wanted them to look different, you wanted an enlarger, a compressor, or a retouch, not this converter.

Transparency will not appear by itself

A JPG has no alpha. PNG-from-JPG is opaque. To get a hole around a product, use /background-remover on a decent original, then keep PNG. Converting JPG to PNG as a prelude to cutout is fine; believing the convert is the cutout is not.

Logos that were saved as JPG (white box around the mark) need a remover or a manual knockout. PNG conversion alone leaves the white box.

Editing then flattening again

Work in PNG or a layered editor. When the destination is a photo portal, export JPG once at the end. That is a single lossy step, not a lifestyle.

Print shops and “PNG for quality” emails

Some print shops ask for PNG because they had a bad JPEG from a customer once. Send a PNG if they insist, and keep the source. If they then downsample it anyway, you did not lose a fight — you met a form. For home inkjet, a high-quality JPG from the camera original is usually enough.

Phone screenshots saved as JPG from the OS, then converted to PNG, do not become retina assets. If you needed a clean UI capture, recapture at a larger logical size or export from the design file.

Editors that re-save as JPEG behind your back

Some “PNG” downloads from social apps are JPEGs with a lying extension. Convertify4u will decode what the bytes actually are. If the PNG is still blocky, the damage was upstream. Work from the camera roll or the design export, not from a Messenger download.

Screenshots and flat logos are the honest PNG cases, because hard edges and type survive. A camera still for email is usually happier as JPG.
