Merge PDF Files Securely in Your Browser

Merging PDFs is page assembly, not a format conversion. You already have valid PDFs. You need one packet: a lease plus addenda, a homework packet plus rubric, an invoice plus proof of payment. The privacy question is simple: does that assembly have to leave your laptop? Why people accidentally overshare during a merge

Cloud merge sites ask you to upload every exhibit even when you only needed to concatenate. That is a habit leftover from 2012. If the UI says Instant, treat it as on-device work. If a sibling tool is cloud (Office convert, OCR), that is a different job. Do not merge confidential exhibits on a cafe computer you do not control, Instant or not — shoulder surfing and download folders still exist.

Only merge files you are allowed to combine. Mixing a public flyer with a passport scan in one PDF is how packets leak through email forwarding.

Collect the source PDFs in the order you want them read, with filenames that sort (01-cover.pdf, 02-terms.pdf).
Open /convert/merge-pdf.

Drop files in order. If the tool lets you reorder, do it before you download. Fixing order later means another merge.
Download the combined PDF and open it. Check that page 1 is the cover you intended and that a middle exhibit did not insert upside-down.
Rotate individual wrong pages with organize tools if needed, then merge again from corrected sources — do not “print to PDF” as a lazy rotate if it rasterizes text.
If the combined file is huge, compress once on /tools/compress-pdf after the assembly is final.

Instant merge is designed to stay free without chewing a daily cloud quota. Pro is for OCR and heavy batches, not for permission to put page 2 after page 1.

Locked files and mixed page sizes

A password on any source will stop a clean merge until you unlock with authorization via /convert/unlock-pdf. Letter plus A4 in one packet is legal; printers may letterbox. Recipients on phones will pinch-zoom mixed sizes. If the packet must look uniform, standardize sources before merge rather than hoping concatenation invents a design system.

Bookmarks and internal links from the sources may not all survive. If the reader must jump to annex C, add a one-page contents sheet with page numbers after you know the final count.

After the packet exists

Name it for humans (Acme-lease-fully-executed.pdf). Keep the separate sources. Merge is not a backup strategy. If you emailed the packet and then found a typo on page 4, you want the original page 4 PDF, not a scavenger hunt through a 40-page flatten.

What Instant merge does not rewrite

Merge concatenates page trees. It does not restyle fonts, does not OCR image pages, and does not “make it one letter size.” If exhibit B is a scan of a napkin, the merged packet still contains a napkin. If you needed a table of contents with live links, add a page you authored, then merge that page in front. If you needed the packet under 5MB, compress after the page order is frozen — merging a compressed file with an uncompressed scan just averages the problem.

Students assembling homework should put the rubric last only if the teacher asked for that order. Professors skim from page 1. A merged packet that starts with a 12-page appendix is how feedback arrives late.
