HEIC to PNG Cluster

Lossless PNG from HEIC — Skip the Extra Crush

The risk is not Apple’s codec. The risk is a second lossy hop. This spoke is HEIC → PNG with no “compress for web” detour, so editors still see the detail you captured.

Pixel-faithful path: decode HEIC, write lossless PNG. No extra compression tax. Local only.

Lossless means PNG, not magic

HEIC already stores a lot of camera detail in a small file. The disaster is a converter that JPEG-encodes first “because it is easier,” then writes PNG from that mush. You cannot recover what the JPEG discarded. This path decodes the Apple container and writes PNG, a lossless format: no new blockiness, native dimensions, files that are larger on disk because they should be. Start from the Photos master, not a Messenger download. Local encode means no farm silently downscaling for bandwidth. Photographers use this before print proofs and retouch. After you have a PNG master, you may still export JPEG or WebP for the live site — but start lossless. PNG will not invent megapixels. A 640 px crop stays 640 px of information even if you later enlarge. For true press plates, some teams still prefer TIFF. PNG is the web-and-editor-friendly lossless cousin.

How it works

  1. 1

    Start from the original still

Camera Roll or a backup master — not a chat recompression.

  2. 2

    Decode without a JPEG middle

Local PNG write. Avoid cloud tools that recompress for “speed.”

  3. 3

    Download the master

Full-resolution PNG for edits, proofs, and archives.

Use cases

Print and large displays

Screens and posters that reveal cheap compression.

Editing masters

Before Photoshop or similar, so you are not retouching artifacts.

Archives

A lossless raster that opens everywhere, without another JPEG generation.

Client proofs

They should see the same texture you saw on the iPhone.

Problems we solve

Converters that JPEG first

HEIC → soft JPEG → PNG is how detail dies. Go direct.

Silent downscales

Native dimensions stay native. Watch tools that shrink “for the web.”

Pixelation after many saves

PNG stops that cascade. JPEG would not.

Trust & privacy

Lossless container

PNG does not add JPEG-style blocks.

Local full-resolution path

Masters never upload to a remote farm.

No quality tax for “speed”

Encoding finishes on your CPU. We do not crush to go faster.
