iPhone HEIC to PNG — Share Stills Outside Apple’s Walls

The photo is fine. The PC is missing a codec. Export PNG so Explorer, Android chat, and school forms display the still. You do not have to re-shoot or live on Most Compatible forever.

Apple users: fix AirDrop sharing by decoding camera stills to PNG locally.

High Efficiency is a storage default, not a sharing format

iPhone, iPad, and Photos write HEIC because it saves gigabytes. Recipients on Windows see blank thumbs. Android messengers reject the attachment. Portals list PNG or JPG only. Toggling Camera to Most Compatible only helps pictures you take after lunch. Last summer’s trip is still HEIC. This spoke is that library problem: get the still onto the machine (or stay in Safari), decode locally, send PNG. PNG is lossless, so it is a better share than “Mail as JPEG” when you still plan to edit. It is also larger — if the friend only needed a chat preview, JPEG is enough. Local processing means IDs and family pics never become a cloud upload. For phone-only steps see the mobile spoke. For no-account framing see the free spoke. Hub is the general tool; this page is Apple-sharing friction only.

How it works

  1. 1

    Export or share the .heic

AirDrop, Files, iCloud, USB — or pick from Photos in Safari. Do not change Camera settings just for one send.

  2. 2

    Decode in the browser

On-device PNG encode. Client shoots stay on this device.

  3. 3

    Send a file everyone opens

Windows, Android, and the web treat PNG as ordinary. The “won’t open” thread stops.

Use cases

AirDrop to Windows or Android

Convert before the handoff so the other device shows a picture, not an error.

School and workplace portals

Forms that reject HEIC but accept PNG.

Family sharing off iMessage

WhatsApp, email, and Android relatives get a real image.

Old Camera Roll cleanup

Existing shots, not just new captures.

Problems we solve

“Can’t open this photo” after AirDrop

Missing codecs on the receiving OS. PNG removes that dependency.

Most Compatible is future-only

It does not rewrite the library. Convert what you already took.

Uploading the roll to random sites

This path is local. IDs stay on-device.

Trust & privacy

Local iPhone processing

No Convertify4u copy of the still.

Works with Photos exports

Files, AirDrop folders, desktop sync — same decode.

No store converter required

Safari or a laptop browser is enough.
