How do I get under 100 KB?

Choose Maximum, convert, and read the output size. Color scans that still miss may need fewer pages or a lower-DPI recapture — the compressor cannot invent a 100 KB photo of a full passport spread.

My job site wants 200 KB. Is Maximum the right start?

Yes. If you remain over 200 KB, delete unused pages or export a text resume instead of a designed one-pager full of photos.

Will Balanced hit 300 KB or 500 KB?

On text-heavy digital files, often. Camera scans usually need Maximum to land in that band.

I only need to stay under 1 MB for email.

Maximum on a file slightly above 1 MB usually succeeds in one pass. Confirm the toast, then attach.

Will 100 KB still be readable?

Extreme caps hurt photos. Native text PDFs fare better than scans. Always open the result before you submit.

Can you guarantee an exact byte count?

No. Ghostscript reduces size; it is not a “set to 199 KB” encoder. Iterate with Maximum, then edit the source if you still miss.

Working backward from a named kilobyte limit

Portals publish 100 KB, 200 KB, 300 KB, 500 KB, or 1 MB because their storage and virus scanners are cheap. You cannot promise an exact byte count from one pass — Ghostscript produces a smaller file, not a slider to 199,999 bytes. The practical method is Maximum, measure, then drop pages or re-scan if you are still over.

Read the form before you compress

Some sites count only the PDF; others count the whole application ZIP. Confirm whether they mean 200 KB or 200 KB per page. A two-page resume at 180 KB is fine; a 12-page visa pack at 180 KB per page will still fail a 1 MB total.

When Maximum is still not enough

Photo scans of certificates resist tiny caps. Split off unused pages, photograph at a lower DPI, or export text-only pages from Word instead of a camera capture. Light and Balanced will not beat a 100 KB ceiling on a color scan.

After you hit the number

Open the download and confirm type is still readable. If a job site later asks for a higher-quality copy, keep the original locally — this tool deletes uploads after download.
