Enlarge Image for Social Media — Platform Pixel Floors

Starting tiny makes Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and WhatsApp look worse after their own compression. Grow the box first, on-device.

Platforms shrink what you give them — they cannot add samples you never had

Uploaders re-encode. If you start at 640 px, the network still compresses, and the result is mush on a phone grid. If you start nearer the recommended box — 1080 × 1080 feed, 1080 × 1920 Stories, 1280 × 720 YouTube thumbs (many creators still master 1920 × 1080 stills), LinkedIn images that survive the preview crop — you have more samples for their encoder to throw away. This spoke is not a scheduler and not an API. It is a local 2× Canvas pass plus optional sharpen so you are not posting an undersized camera export. Convert HEIC first. WhatsApp will crush either way; sending as a document sometimes preserves more than a chat image. Pinterest and TikTok covers still want readable type — if type is 8 px tall on the original, scaling will not make it a headline. Cap 10,000 px, far above social needs; staying near 1080–1920 keeps files light. After scale, compress if the uploader rejects megabytes, but do not shrink below the floor you just hit. This is not 256-color GIF work.

How it works

  1. 1

    Check the destination box

Square feed, 9:16 Story, 16:9 thumb. Crop to that aspect first when the subject would be chopped.

  2. 2

    Scale with light sharpen

Progressive 2× in Canvas. Sharpen just enough that type and faces survive the next compression.

  3. 3

    Export and post

Download. Compress only if the uploader refuses the file size.

Use cases

Instagram and Facebook grids

1080-class squares and 4:5 portraits. Do not upload 1920 × 1080 into a square slot and hope.

LinkedIn and X posts

Link-preview and in-feed images that look soft when the source was an email forward.

YouTube, Pinterest, TikTok covers

Clickable frames. Type must be large on the original or it will fail at thumbnail size even after scaling.

WhatsApp product shares

Scale, then send. Expect another squeeze; keep a master outside the chat.

Problems we solve

Soft posts after upload

You cannot disable their encoder. Starting with more pixels usually survives better than posting a 400 px crop.

Tiny camera exports

Use the largest master still on the roll. Screenshots of the post are the worst possible source.

HEIC drafts

Convert, then scale. Instagram apps sometimes accept HEIC; this browser tool needs a raster.

Drafts stay in the tab
