Compatibility is GIF’s superpower; efficiency is not
When MP4 should win
GIF vs MP4 usually crowns MP4 for weight and photographic clarity. Choose GIF when autoplay loops must work in stubborn email, some LMS embeds, or channels that literally want .gif. Feeds that already autoplay muted video do not need a palette file.
Animated WebP on the modern web
WebP typically wins weight and quality in supporting browsers. GIF still wins older Outlook-class mail and some LMS players. If you are rasterizing WebP into GIF, you are paying a compatibility tax — see the WebP spoke.
APNG and true alpha
APNG keeps better alpha than indexed GIF; support is uneven. Chat stickers still default to GIF in many apps. When alpha is the brief and the host is modern, prefer APNG or a video-with-alpha path over pretending GIF is PNG.
