Instagram feed is not Stories. Stories and Reels covers are 1080×1920 (9:16). Feed squares are 1080×1080; portrait feed is often 1080×1350 (4:5). YouTube thumbs are 1280×720 (16:9). LinkedIn article cards sit near 1200×627. Facebook/Open Graph still uses 1200×628-class wides. X headers are 1500×500. Pinterest likes 2:3. WhatsApp and Telegram DPs are small squares cropped to circles.
Export once per destination. Stretching a square into 9:16 is how ears vanish. After the box is right, encode only if the app also enforces a KB cap. Keep brand masters separate from social derivatives — name files campaign-platform-ratio.

Feed versus Stories versus thumbs
Square 1080 for grid and many carousels. 4:5 if you want taller feed. 9:16 for Stories, Reels covers, TikTok stills, WhatsApp status. 16:9 (1280×720 or 1920×1080) for YouTube thumbs and landscape ads. Mixing these is the “black bars” bug.
Wide headers and link cards
LinkedIn and Facebook shares want a wide still, not a Story crop. X’s 1500×500 header is shorter than an OG card — do not reuse one file for both. Put faces in the center third so UI chrome is less likely to cover them.
They will recode anyway
Starting at the displayed size means Instagram’s encoder does less panicked downscale. A 48 MP original handed to TikTok is how mush happens. Pixels first on this page; compressor if the upload still fails on bytes.
