From pixels to paper without leaking portraits
DPI is not a slider you “set” on a 800px file
DPI metadata without enough pixels still prints soft. Labs care about pixel count at the physical size. 300 DPI for close-view photo paper. 150 DPI can work on a large poster seen from a few feet. 72 DPI is a screen myth if you are ordering paper.
IDs versus posters versus flyers
IDs: small physical size, strict pixels, plain field (composite after isolation). A4 flyers: 2480×3508 at 300 DPI if you want photo-sharp; many offices print “good enough” at 150 DPI. Posters: do the inches×DPI math; you may not have enough source pixels — say so before you pay for a 6-foot print.
Portrait versus landscape paper
Rotate in camera or crop. Stretching a landscape still into a portrait poster distorts. Profile pictures for paper programs still start as a square then a circle crop in the layout app.
How it works
- 1
Write inches (or mm) and the shop’s DPI
Multiply. Those integers go into Canvas. Embassy PDFs override our examples — read them the week you apply.
- 2
Drop a high-resolution still, keep portraits local
Selfies and IDs never need a cloud. If the source is smaller than the print math, retake or accept softness.
- 3
Download and send to the printer or portal
JPEG for photos, PNG if the shop prefers it for graphics. Flatten alpha if the RIP hates transparency.
Use cases
Visa and passport squares
600×600-class US 2×2 at 300 DPI — confirm your country.
Yearbook and program stills
Uniform headshot boxes, private files.
Half-sheet flyers
Panel size × DPI, plus bleed if asked.
Poster mockups
Math first; do not invent megapixels.
Problems we solve
Cloud ID uploads
Biometrics on stranger disks. Canvas only.
Wrong aspect for a panel
Crop to the paper ratio. Lock aspect after that.
Blurry upscaled selfies
Retake at higher resolution. Do not poster-print a 1 MP crop.
Trust & technology
Portrait privacy
Selfies and IDs never upload on this Instant path.
Integer typing
Match the embassy or lab digit list.
No watermark
