Instagram Carousel Maker — feed swipes, not Story fiction

Instagram still lets a post be a stack of stills. This studio makes those stills at square or 4:5. It does not post them, and it does not ship a 9:16 Story canvas.

Fit Instagram’s still-image swipe, not every surface

Boxes that belong in the feed

1080×1080 CSS (about 2160 exported) is the grid-native square. 1080×1350 CSS is the taller post that occupies more feed. Mix them and Instagram will letterbox or crop — pick one ratio for the whole ZIP. Keep type off the extreme edges if you will add captions in-app; the composer chrome varies. Cover-fit plus focus pan is how a vertical portrait survives a square slide: drag until the eyes sit in the middle, not on the cut.

Ten vs sixteen, collage vs swipe

The studio allows sixteen slices. Instagram’s feed carousel has long capped at ten. Design ten or fewer if that is the destination, or split into two posts. A collage (one image, many cells) is a different mood — use it when comparison should be simultaneous. A swipe is for sequential reveal: problem, detail, result. Reels and Stories want 9:16; labeling a 4:5 ZIP as a Story pack would be dishonest. Reel covers are a separate still you can approximate with 4:5, then let the app crop.

Upload order is the story

ZIP names are slide-01, slide-02, … Upload in that order. If the OS sorts by “date added,” you can scramble the narrative — sort by name. Instagram will recompress; start from this 2× master, not from screenshots of the filmstrip UI. HEIC from iPhone must be converted before frames appear. Captions, music, and alt text live in Instagram, not here.

  1. 1

Choose 1:1 or 4:5 for every frame

One ratio for the ZIP. 4:5 usually wins more phone screen in the feed.

  2. 2

Set slide count to the beats you have (≤10 for Instagram)

Empty slices waste the swipe. Extra frames past ten will not help in-app.

  3. 3

Export ZIP, sort by name, attach in Instagram

This studio does not publish. The app is the last mile.

Use cases

Tutorial walks

Each step a full-frame still, not a tiny cell in a mosaic.

Lookbooks

Outfit or product angles that deserve pinch-zoom.

Before → after

Two or three frames so the change is a swipe, not a split that shrinks both.

Launch sequences

Hook frame, three proofs, close — still photographs, type added in-app if needed.

Problems we solve

Wrong ratio in the composer

A 16:9 landscape dumped into a square post loses the sides. Choose here.

Eleven-frame optimism

The studio will ZIP sixteen. Instagram will not thank you. Trim.

Story-sized copy on this URL

9:16 is not in the dropdown. We will not relabel 4:5 as a Story.

Trust & technology

Feed boxes we actually ship

1:1 and 4:5 match still-image habits Instagram has published for years.

ZIP of stills

The format the composer expects: separate images, not a mystery video.

Local until you open the app

Meta only sees the files after you upload.
