720p thumbs vs 1080p masters
YouTube thumbnail spec
YouTube’s help pages have long listed 1280×720 as the thumbnail upload size (16:9, under 2MB, JPG/PNG/GIF). A 1920×1080 still works but is heavier than you need for a thumb. If the still will also be a video frame, export 1920×1080 separately.
When 720p is enough
Email newsletters, older projectors, and many blog heroes never display more than ~1280 CSS pixels. Shipping 1920×1080 then letting the browser downscale wastes kilobytes. Use 1280×720 when the layout max-width is 1280 or less.
Readable type at 720p
Thumbnails are seen at postage-stamp size in search. Huge body text at 1280×720 still vanishes. Three to five words, thick stroke, high contrast. This tool does not set type — resize the designed graphic.
Not a Story size
1280×720 is landscape. Stories need 1080×1920. Mixing them causes black bars in the Instagram camera.
