Resize Image to 1080×1080 (Square Feed)

1080×1080 is the square Instagram-era default for feed posts, profile grids, and many marketplace thumbnails. Lock the square here before the app crops your subject.

Why 1080×1080 still matters

Instagram feed vs Stories

Feed posts that look “square” on a phone grid are 1:1. 1080×1080 is the pixel size Instagram has recommended for years for that grid. Stories and Reels are 9:16 (1080×1920). If you upload a square into Stories, Instagram will pad or zoom. Use this page for feed, carousels that stay 1:1, and profile pictures that will be circular-cropped from a square.

Marketplace tiles and avatars

Amazon-style main images and many Shopify theme thumbs are square. 1080×1080 is large enough to zoom and small enough to compress for a PDP. Profile avatars on Slack or LinkedIn are often displayed round — compose the face in the center of the 1080 square so the crop does not clip ears.

Do not confuse 1080×1080 with 1080p

1080p usually means 1920×1080 (16:9). 1080×1080 is a square with 1080 on both sides. Search results mix these constantly. If a printer asks for “1080p,” they probably want 1920×1080, not this page.

After the square is locked

If Instagram still compresses artifacts, the remaining problem is kilobytes, not pixels. Compress once. If you also need a 4:5 portrait feed post, that is 1080×1350 — not this preset. Export a second file instead of stretching the square.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload a photo you own

Portrait photos will crop top and bottom to become square. Landscape photos lose the sides. Decide the subject before you hit export.

  2. 2

    Confirm 1080×1080

Keep aspect lock on if you will crop; unlock only if a graphic must stretch (logos usually should not).

  3. 3

Preview as a circle if it is an avatar

Mentally crop a circle in the center. If text sits in the corners, it will vanish on LinkedIn or Slack.
